Agnes B. Smaha Gallery

The walls of Gosnell Memorial Hospice House exhibit local artwork as part of the Agnes B. Smaha Gallery, named by her family as a tribute to Mrs. Smaha's pursuit of painting later in life.

Agnes B. Smaha was born in Lawrence, MA in 1916. She moved to Maine in 1936 with her husband, John M. Smaha where they joined John’s brother in the grocery business and later went on to open their own store in Legion Square, South Portland. Agnes took up painting when she was in her 50s in what was one of the more fortunate random occurrences in the universe. While playing golf, a friend suggested that Agnes join her in taking painting classes from a local artist. This launched a prolific period of art production in her life, which she enjoyed until she was no longer able to hold a brush. She produced many pieces, mostly in oil. Mrs. Smaha died peacefully at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House on December 7, 2011.
