“Circle of Caring” Members Gather to Celebrate Philanthropy at HSM

Supporters of Hospice of Southern Maine gathered at the Portland Country Club on Wednesday, May 22 2013 to recognize and honor the 64 members of the Circle of Caring, each of whom gave $1,000 or more to HSM in 2012.

Presenting at the luncheon was CEO, Arlene Wing, who summarized issues affecting the hospice industry. Arlene gave an inside look at the extraordinary year of growth for Hospice of Southern Maine in 2012, and gave a preview of things to come in 2013 and beyond. Also speaking, was Cathy Cestaro, a southern Maine community member whose mother was cared for at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, the inpatient facility operated by Hospice of Southern Maine. Cathy told her family’s story from the time of her mother’s diagnosis to her final days, and remarked on the importance of hospice care in our community and the impact of philanthropy at HSM.

To conclude the luncheon, Board Chair Miriam Leonard, Vice President, Special Projects at MaineHealth, asked guests to have the final word by sharing one that that summarized their feelings about Hospice of Southern Maine. The sharing was an inspiring and moving exchange where the impact of the work of hospice was clearly expressed by all.

Guests admired an abundance of beautiful flowers that were generously provided by Compositions of Portland.

The luncheon proved to be an engaging afternoon of celebrating the mission of HSM, “Compassion, care and comfort through end of life”, as well as appreciation for the community investments that make it both possible and sustainable.
