End-of-life issues will eventually
touch every family.
Our mission is to improve the quality of life at the end of life.
Hospice of Southern Maine formed to meet the growing
need for a comprehensive hospice program in southern Maine. In 2003, Hope Garden of York County and
Horizon House of Cumberland County joined to create Hospice of Southern Maine. In addition, three area homecare agencies,
Southern Maine Health and Homecare Services in Kennebunk, Visiting Nurse Services in Saco, and Community Health Services in
Portland, integrated their hospice programs into Hospice of Southern Maine. The result? A fully integrated, community-based hospice
provider with a single purpose of providing and improving end-of-life care.
Hospice care is a compassionate, skilled, and cost-effective
alternative for people facing a life-limiting illness. Hospice seeks neither to prolong life nor to hasten death, but to
promote and provide better care of all patients with life-limiting illnesses. We provide the full range of professional and
volunteer services, consisting of physical, emotional, and spiritual care that respects individuals' wishes and maintains
their dignity.
Hospice of Southern Maine is
a nonprofit 501c(3) organization that is certified by Medicare and licensed by the State of Maine.
