Founders Society

Hospice of Southern Maine has established the Annual Founders Society, in which your annual gift of $1,000 or more will help us to continue the legacy of providing care and comfort while preserving the dignity of individuals with a focus on family-centered hospice care. The Founders Society has been established in honor of Dr. Cicley Saunders.

Doctor Saunders was born in 1918, educated at Oxford, war-time nurse, and later a physician. She defined and shaped the discipline of symptom control and supportive therapy for the most vulnerable of our populations, the dying. In 1967, by creating St. Christopher’s Hospice in London as a place designed to care for the dying, she modeled a healthcare system where personhood and dignity were preserved, pain was managed, and family-centered care was provided. She is considered to be a major contributing force in the development of modern hospice care throughout the world, and was an early leader in the developing discipline that has come to be termed palliative care.

As a member of the Founder’s Society, you will receive:

  • An invitation to an annual reception held for members of this special community of supporters.
  • Unique recognition at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House throughout the year.
  • Unique recognition in future Hospice of Southern Maine Annual Reports
