About Us

It began with a few community members recognizing the need to improve access and resources for end-of-life care. Individuals from Maine Medical Center, Southern Maine Medical Center, Maine Center for Cancer Medicine and local Home Visiting Nurse organizations joined forces with community leaders to establish Hospice of Southern Maine.

Hospice of Southern Maine was incorporated in 2003, and in 2004 we admitted our first home program patients. We opened the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in 2007 to provide our community with the additional resource of an inpatient facility. At Hospice of Southern Maine, our mission is to improve the quality of life at the end of life. We seek neither to prolong life nor to hasten death, but to provide excellent care for patients with a life-limiting illness and support for their families.

Hospice of Southern Maine is a non-profit 501(c)3, Medicare certified, state licenced  agency.

Hospice of Southern Maine is committed to being a leader in improving end-of-life care within our community through advocacy, professional education and community outreach.

Hospice services are based on the patient’s healthcare needs, not ability to pay. Reimbursement for services is available through Medicare, MaineCare and other insurance plans. Check patient’s insurance plan for benefit eligibility. Options for subsidized care are available for income-qualified patients.

Hospice of Southern Maine does not discriminate against any person on the basis of race, color, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender, age at admission, treatment or participation in its programs, services and activities, or employment. For further information about this policy, contact the Section 504 Coordinator at (207) 289-3640, toll-free at (866) 621-7600 or at Maine Relay 711.
