Scarborough, ME - After the Death of an Adult Child Daytime Support Group
Hospice of Southern Maine is offering a daytime bereavement support in Scarborough, ME. The death of one's child is considered "a death out of sequence" - we do not expect our children to die before we do. Losing a child at any age is something no parent ever wants to face, but the parent who loses an adult child does not always receive the same degree of acknowledgement and support as the parent who experiences the death of a younger child. The daytime group will take place on 8 consecutive Thursdays, beginning January 21 and ending March 11, 2010. The group will meet from 12:00 to 3:30 p.m. at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church at 350 Route One in Scarborough.

A Night at the Movies: Wit
March 23, 2010 - 5:30 - 8:00pm
Deservedly hailed as one of the best films of 2001, Wit is an exquisite contemplation of life, learning, and tenacious, richly expressed humanity. The focus is on the hospital experience of Vivian (Emma Thompson), a fiercely demanding professor of English literature whose academic specialty--the metaphysical poetry of John Donne--is the armor she wears against the cruel indignities of her cancer treatment. While losing all that she held dear, she reassesses her life as an aloof intellectual, and Wit illuminates her bracingly eloquent and deeply moving struggle for dignity, meaning, and peace at the end of life. Running time: 99 minutes, followed by discussion.

A Night at the Movies: Rachel Getting Married
March 30, 2010 - 5:30 - 8:30pm
When Kym (Anne Hathaway) returns to her family home for the wedding of her sister Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt), she brings a long history of personal crises, family conflict and tragedy along with her. The wedding couple's abundant party of friends and relations has gathered for a joyful weekend of feasting, music and love, but Kym - with her biting one-liners and flair for bombshell drama is a catalyst for long-simmering tensions in the family dynamic. Filled with the rich and eclectic characters that remain a hallmark of Jonathan Demme's films, Rachel Getting Married paints a heartfelt, perceptive, honest portrayal of what grief and loss can do to a family. Discussion to follow.
Running Time: 113 minutes.
