Hospice of Southern Maine’s partnership with Maine Medical Center’s Palliative Care team, New England Cancer Specialists and Southern Maine Healthcare enables our patients to receive medical services from specially trained physicians 7 days a week. This relationship enhances the continuum of care for patients in the Greater Portland community & Southern Maine.


Cynthia Burnham, D.O., Interim Medical Director and Hospice Physician

Cynthia Burnham, D.O. served as interim medical director for Hospice of Southern Maine from June 2013-June 2014.  She is Board Certified by the American College of Psychiatry and Neurology and has extensive experience treating patients in long-term care settings.  Dr. Burnham attended University of Health Sciences - College of Osteopathic Medicine.  She completed her internship at the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine and her psychiatric residency at UMass Medical Center.

Paul Han, M.D., Hospice Physician

Dr. Han is the Director of CORE, a behavioral and health services researcher, and a board-certified general internist and palliative care physician.  He received an M.D. from the New York University School of Medicine, and an M.A. in Bioethics and an M.P.H. from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed Internal Medicine residency training at UCLA, and a fellowship in cancer prevention and control at the National Cancer Institute (NCI).


 Rebecca Hutchinson, M.D., Hospice Physician

Dr. Hutchinson completed her internship and residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital and her fellowship in hospice and palliative care at Maine Medical Center.  She woks in Maine Medical Partners palliative medicine group.

  Rebecca Kowaloff, D.O., Hospice Physician

Rebecca Kowaloff is a board certified internist at Southern Maine Healthcare.  She attended Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Medical School and completed her residency at Maine Medical Center.  Dr. Kowaloff also completed a Palliative Care Fellowship at Maine Medical Center.  Rebecca has a sub-specialty in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.


 Richard Marino, M.D., Hospice Physician

Richard Marino, M.D. is a board certified physician with twelve years of experience and specializes in Geriatric Medicine.  Currently, Dr. Marino serves as Medical Director at The Cedars.
He is also a member of the American Geriatrics Society, American Medical Directors Association and American Academy of Family Physicians.  Dr. Marino serves as a faculty member at Maine Medical Center.
Dr. Marino attended Boston University and completed his residency at the Maine Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program where he served as Co-Chief resident.  Additionally, he completed his specialty in geriatrics at the Maine Medical Center Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program at Maine Medical Center.
 Fernando Moreno, M.D., Hospice Physician

Fernando Moreno is board certified in family medicine and has a subspecialty in hospice and palliative medicine.  Dr. Moreno works for Maine Medical Partners palliative medicine group.

 Thomas Morrione, M.D., Hospice Physician

Thomas Morrione is the medical director of New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland.  He is a graduate of George Washington University School of Medicine.  Dr. Morrione is board certified in family and geriatric medicine.


 Isabella N. Stumpf, D.O., Hospice Physician

Isabella Stumpf, D.O. is an attending physician at Hospice of Southern Maine.  Dr. Stumpf is board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.  She attended the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency and pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Maine Medical Center.  Her primary practice is at Maine Medical Center where she serves as the Division Director of Palliative Medicine and as Clinical Assistant Professor Faculty.  Dr. Stumpf is the Medical Director for Palliative Care at MaineHealth and also holds a per diem faculty position at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Mark Wrona, M.D., Hospice Physician

Mark Wrona, M.D is board certified in Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine.  He attended University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his Residency at Maine Medical Center.  He also holds a position at New England Cancer Specialists as well as Maine Medical Center. His areas of medical interest are in pain management, palliative care and advanced care planning.
